Auburn keeps the momentum on the recruiting trail going with the flip of Gary Chatman Jr. to the Tigers. Chatman Jr. is the 6th commit of the 2027 class and the first QB commit. The Snellville, GA native is a perfect fit for Auburn’s fututre and here is why.
Now, before we get into the “diamond in the rough” talk, let’s look at the facts. Chatman, a standout from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, was previously committed to Wake Forest. He’s recently made some noise in the decommitment era and decided that his new home is at Auburn.
The Tape: A Developmental Piece with High Upside
When you look at the 2027 cycle, you aren’t necessarily looking for a guy who has to be a Day 1 starter. You’re looking for a guy who can compete, push the room, and fit the identity of the offense. At 6-foot tall and 190 pounds, Chatman Jr. still has some bulk to put on his frame, but the raw tools are there.
In ten games last season, he put up some solid numbers:
- Passing: 1,494 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.
- Rushing: 418 yards and 5 touchdowns.
- Speed: Clocked at a 4.48 according to MaxPreps.
The most intriguing part of his game for this Alex Golesh offense? His arm strength. To win in this system, you have to connect on the deep ball, and Chatman has the vertical juice to get it downfield to our playmakers. While his 59.7% completion percentage needs to tick up, his familiarity with RPO styles shows he understands how to read what’s in front of him and get the ball out quickly.
The “QB Effect” and Recruiting Momentum
I’ve said it before: you want to galvanize an offensive class around a quarterback. Having Chapman Jr. on board gives this 2027 class an identity. It allows the staff to go to offensive linemen and receivers and say, “This is the guy you’re going to be blocking for and catching passes from for the next three to four years”.
Currently, Auburn is sitting in a really solid position, with many composite rankings placing this early 2027 group inside the top 25. Golesh and staff aren’t just out here chasing stars for the sake of it; the staff is focusing on guys who fit the “Auburn identity”.
Looking Ahead to Big Cat Weekend
Landing a QB now is huge because the Tigers haven’t even hit the stride of where Auburn traditionally picks up steam: Big Cat Weekend.
This commitment signals that Joel Gordon and Alex Golesh are confident in the room they are building. By the time they get these recruits on campus for the big summer events and the “proof of concept” games in the fall, having a leader like Chatman already in the fold only helps our case with other high-level targets.
Is Gary Chatman Jr. an NFL-caliber talent today? It’s too early to say. But with this staff’s track record of development, he is exactly the kind of “diamond in the rough” that can flourish on the Plains.
We’re keeping an eye on the visit lists as they populate, and we expect a few more splashes as we approach Big Cat.
