Auburn lands a commitment from von Brandt over Notre Dame

Auburn Football fans have spent the better part of the off-season stressing over the offensive line trenches. The narrative among the fan base and national critics had started to crystallize: Is Auburn becoming “Three-Star U” on the frontline? Can this coaching staff actually pull elite, blue-chip blockers out of high school?

That narrative just got turned completely on its head.

In a massive recruiting win, head coach Alex Golesh and offensive line coach Tyler Hudanick have officially secured a commitment from one of the most coveted prospects in the country: four-star offensive tackle Layton von Brandt.

The Blueprint on von Brandt: A Rare Trench Prize

Von Brandt is not just another body to add to the roster; he is a premium prize at a premium position where Auburn has historically struggled to recruit directly from the high school ranks. Standing at a massive 6’6″ and weighing in the 280–290 lb range, the Appoquinimink High School (Delaware) product has the ideal frame of a Sunday-player.

According to 247Sports, Von Brandt’s metrics speak for themselves:

  • National Ranking: No. 64 overall player in the country.
  • Position Ranking: The No. 5 rated offensive tackle nationally.
  • State Ranking: The No. 1 overall prospect in the state of Delaware.

Auburn hasn’t landed an offensive tackle of this high-profile ilk out of high school since 2017. For years, the program has patched holes out wide by taking interior guards and sliding them out, or by heavily relying on the junior college ranks and the transfer portal. Landing a true, blue-chip tackle out of high school is an absolute game-changer for the future of the offense.

Swooping in on Powerhouses

What makes this commitment even sweeter for the Tiger faithful is who Auburn had to beat out to get him. Von Brandt boasts a powerhouse offer sheet that includes Georgia, Ohio State, and Florida State. He was originally committed to James Franklin at Penn State before backing off his pledge when Franklin was let go. Following that decommitment, Notre Dame was widely considered by recruiting insiders to be the absolute mathematical lock to land him.

Instead, Golesh and Coach Hoodie swooped in, sold the vision, and shut down the Fighting Irish hype train, leaving both South Bend and Gainesville losing their minds.

Quality Over Quantity: Evaluating the 2027 Class

With Von Brandt on board, Auburn’s 2027 recruiting class climbs to eight total commitments, pushing them to the No. 26 spot nationally (and No. 22 in the composite rankings).

While some fans have expressed anxiety over the class size, the data shows there is zero reason to panic. Auburn has immense room to grow, and their average star rating per player is incredibly high, spearheaded by Von Brandt and dynamic four-star running back Johnson-Cook.

The player culture is already growing, too. Shortly after the announcement on Instagram, running back commit Johnson-Cook was immediately seen tagging other targets in the comments, rallying the troops with a simple message: “We got him.” Elite running backs want elite maulers in front of them, and the class is starting to build its own identity.

The Judicious NIL Strategy

This commitment also validates Auburn’s calculated, mature approach to the modern NIL landscape. The current coaching staff has made it clear that they will not blindly throw bags of money around to win an artificial “Signing Day Championship” for high school players who haven’t played a college snap yet. They want players committed to the university and the culture, not just the highest bidder.

Auburn will always be highly competitive with NIL, but they are remaining judicious. They chose to save capital in rooms where they feel great about internal development, like quarterback, and deployed their resources heavily to solve a glaring position of need at tackle. It is a sustainable strategy built for wins in September and October, not just headlines in December.
