Top WR Jase Mathews Commits to Auburn

Auburn football has made a significant splash in the 2026 recruiting class: four-star wide receiver Jase Mathews (Greene County, Leakesville, Miss.) has officially committed to the Tigers, choosing them over SEC rivals including Ole Miss, LSU and Texas A&M.

A Standout Receiver

Mathews ranks as the No. 2 wide receiver in the nation and is highly regarded for his athleticism and playmaking ability. In his junior season, he recorded 68 catches for 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns, showcasing big-play potential.

Scouting reports praise Mathews as a “dynamic slot receiver who wins with outstanding short-area quickness and route creativity,” noting his flexibility, separation skills, and ability to make acrobatic catches in traffic.

Why Auburn Won the Battle

Several factors reportedly swayed Mathews to Auburn:

  • Relationships with the coaching staff — Mathews has developed particularly strong bonds with wide receivers coach Marcus Davis, and also cites connections with head coach Hugh Freeze, offensive coordinator Derrick Nix, and recruiting strategist Kenyatta Watson.
  • Chemistry with current players — He’s close friends with Auburn freshman quarterback Deuce Knight and rising sophomore Cam Coleman, which helped solidify his comfort with the program.
  • Campus familiarity — Mathews has visited Auburn multiple times, including an official visit in June, and repeatedly praised the experience and atmosphere.

Impact on Auburn’s 2026 Class

Mathews becomes Auburn’s 12th commitment in the 2026 cycle and the highest-rated offensive recruit in the class. The Tigers’ class has surged in national rankings as a result—rising to No. 54 nationally, according to 247Sports.

Looking Ahead

With Mathews now in the fold, Auburn has secured one of the nation’s elite wide receivers, a move that could pay dividends early in his collegiate career given his polished route-running and athletic upside. As the Tigers continue filling out their class, this commitment may also catalyze further recruiting momentum.

Next steps for Mathews include preparing for Auburn’s campus and ramping up as a key piece of the 2026 offense, while officially signing during the Early Signing Period this December.
