WATCH THE FILM: Horatio Fields

Auburn fans got a glimpse of what to expect from Wake Forest transfer Horatio Fields this spring. While the raw tools are evident, there’s also plenty of room for growth. In this edition of Watch the Film, I took a look at two games—Cal and Clemson—to evaluate Fields’ strengths, weaknesses, and what kind of role he might play in Auburn’s offense. Horatio Fields offensive weapon Hugh Freeze has been misssing?

Blocking: Physical Frame, But Technique Lags

Fields has the size to be a reliable perimeter blocker, but he’s not there yet technically. Multiple clips showed his posture too upright and a lack of leverage on blocks.

Still, he appears assignment sound—he knows where he needs to be, even if the execution isn’t always clean. That gives the coaching staff something to work with.

Route Running: Separation and Savvy

Fields shows flashes of polish in his route running. Whether working from the slot or split wide, he does well creating separation, especially on in-breaking routes and comebacks.

He’s especially dangerous on fade routes, where he can leverage his size and timing. His ability to win at the top of routes and track the ball in tight windows is one of his more consistent traits.

Hands and Catch Radius: One of His Best Traits

When the ball is on time and in range, Fields shows confident hands and a solid catch radius. He had multiple grabs that required adjustments mid-route or at the catch point.

Final Takeaway

Fields isn’t a finished product, but there’s no question about the upside. If he sharpens his blocking technique and continues developing timing with the QB room, he’ll be a weapon for the Tigers this fall. His physicality in routes, high-point ability, and willingness to go across the middle give him a solid floor—and a high contributing role.

Bottom Line: Don’t be surprised if Fields plays meaningful snaps early. Just don’t expect him to be perfect out of the gate.
