Eric Singleton Could Be the Spark Auburn’s Offense Has Been Missing

Georgia Tech wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. (2) moves the ball down the field during the first half of a NCAA college football game against Georgia Tech in Athens, Ga., on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024.

Auburn’s wide receiver room is deeper than it’s been in years, and at the center of the 2025 buzz is transfer wideout Eric Singleton. After a productive season at Georgia Tech where he totaled 754 receiving yards, Singleton arrives on the Plains with game-breaking speed and the potential to be a go-to target in an evolving Auburn offense.

Head coach Hugh Freeze has plenty of reasons to be optimistic. The Tigers’ passing attack, led by quarterback Jackson Arnold, is poised to make a significant leap. With top-tier talent like Cam Coleman and Perry Thompson already on the roster and Malcolm Simmons reportedly making huge strides in the offseason, the addition of Singleton gives the offense yet another dynamic weapon.

What sets Singleton apart is his elite speed. Clocked unofficially in the 4.2 to 4.3-second range in the 40-yard dash, Singleton has already garnered early NFL Draft buzz. His ability to stretch the field vertically and take the top off defenses should help Auburn open up its playbook in 2025.

Still, Auburn’s offensive success won’t hinge on just one player. With so many mouths to feed—including Coleman, Thompson, Simmons, and tight ends expected to be more involved this season—there’s a real question about how much volume any single receiver will get. But what Singleton brings is not just speed, but reliability. At Georgia Tech, when the Yellow Jackets needed a play, they looked his way. Despite only scoring three touchdowns last season, he was consistently targeted in crucial moments.

Could Singleton hit 1,000 yards in 2025? The potential is there. But that depends on a variety of factors—game plan, target share, and offensive balance among them. The competition for touches may be fierce, but that could play to Singleton’s advantage. With defenses forced to account for Coleman’s physical presence and the promise of a more diverse attack, Singleton may find himself in more favorable matchups.

Why did Singleton choose Auburn? It wasn’t about playing time—he likely had no shortage of suitors. The move suggests confidence in his fit with Freeze’s vision and belief in the opportunity to showcase his skillset on a bigger stage. Being part of a loaded receiver room may actually help him shine, as it reduces the pressure of carrying the entire unit on his back.

Auburn’s coaching staff seems intent on increasing opportunities for receivers. Last season, targets were hard to come by, but Singleton had over 70 at Georgia Tech—an almost unheard-of number for an Auburn receiver in recent years. To replicate or surpass that, the Tigers will need creative play-calling, longer drives, and better quarterback efficiency.

One path to that? Running the football. Auburn’s run game is expected to be a strength again in 2025, and if opponents stack the box to stop it, that should open up play-action and vertical shots—situations where Singleton thrives. Whether it’s out of four-wide sets or strategic mismatches, Freeze and his staff will need to find ways to get Singleton the ball.

Could Singleton become Auburn’s leading receiver? Absolutely. If Cam Coleman draws the majority of defensive attention, Singleton may quietly put together a massive season. And in the case of injury or unexpected regression from other receivers, he could easily step into the spotlight—just as Keandre Lambert-Smith did last year.

Ultimately, Singleton gives Auburn something it hasn’t had in a long time: a wideout with NFL-caliber speed, production, and polish. If he delivers on his promise, he won’t just elevate the Tigers’ offense—he might hear his name called early on draft night.
