Auburn’s Defensive Line Poised to Shine in 2025

Heading into the 2025 season, Auburn fans had lingering questions about the defensive line. After losing key players like Jayson Jones to the NFL, depth and production were major concerns. But this offseason has provided some promising answers—and reasons for optimism.

Under third-year head coach Hugh Freeze and new defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, Auburn’s defense will feature a 3-3-5 scheme. While it may look like a three-man front on paper, the “Buck” position functions as an edge rusher, often giving the appearance of a four-man front. For this to succeed, Auburn will need high-level production from its three starting down linemen.

One player poised to make a major impact is Keldric Faulk, a name already being circled by SEC analysts. After recording 9 sacks, 31 quarterback hurries, and 45 total tackles in 2024, Faulk enters 2025 as an early candidate for First-Team All-SEC—and potentially All-American honors. Despite being slowed by an injury midway through last season, Faulk’s ability to generate pressure is unquestioned. With improved depth along the line, Auburn hopes to keep him fresh, maximizing his effectiveness in late-game situations.

Joining Faulk in the trenches is  Quientrail Jamison-Travis, a JUCO transfer who earned valuable experience in 2024 with over 300 snaps. While his numbers weren’t flashy—just two sacks and a few quarterback hits—his role in the middle is vital. In Durkin’s scheme, the nose tackle’s job is to occupy blockers and clog running lanes, allowing linebackers to flow freely. Jamison-Travis may not lead the team in tackles, but his impact will be felt in how disruptive he is to opposing run games.

The final projected starter is Malik Blocton, a sophomore who flashed tremendous potential as a true freshman. With 305 snaps, three sacks, and 12 total tackles in 2024, Blocton showed he’s capable of becoming a force. Coaches are hoping he takes a leap in his second season, following a path similar to former Auburn standout Marcus Harris. Blocton has the tools to be a nightmare for opposing offenses—particularly against the run—and could play his way into double-digit sack territory if his development continues.

Depth, or the lack thereof, has limited Auburn’s defensive identity in recent years. Coach Freeze has emphasized the need for rotation, and this year, the Tigers appear to have enough bodies to execute that plan. Talented freshmen like Antonio Coleman and Jared Smith, along with transfers such as James Ash and Dallas Walker, are expected to provide support and keep the starters fresh.

If Auburn can stay healthy and effectively rotate their front, this defensive line could be a strength by season’s end. With Faulk’s pass-rushing prowess, Blocton’s explosive potential, and Jamison-Travis anchoring the middle, the Tigers are aiming to dominate in the trenches—and silence those early offseason doubts.
