Auburn has officially secured the commitment of Thomas Dowd. This 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward is in transferring from Troy. Regarded by many observers as a “double-double machine,” Dowd brings a wealth of production to the Tigers. He averaged roughly 14 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season while leading the Sun Belt in rebounding. He will provide a lot of versatility, something the Tigers need.
Beyond the impressive stat line, Dowd offers something that is highly coveted in the modern era of college basketball: NCAA tournament experience. Having led Troy to back-to-back appearances in the “Big Dance,” Dowd is expected to be a leader for this Auburn squad, providing an immediate voice in the locker room alongside returning stars Tahad Pettiford and Kevin Overton.
Dowd, so far, is my favorite signing of the current portal cycle. The Dothan native’s ability to play an “inside-out” game will be key for Auburn this season. Dowd is not merely a post player; he has the capability to step out and stretch the floor, shooting proficiently from the perimeter. This versatility aligns perfectly with what Auburn needs on offense. Steven Pearl’s system rewards players who can contribute on both ends of the floor. As a native of Alabama, Dowd has ties to Auburn. Also, his arrival provides Auburn with the exact type of physical, experienced, and skilled forward they needed to round out their rotation for the upcoming season.
