The 2025-26 season for Auburn Men’s Basketball was a wild ride defined by transition, grit, and a golden finish in Indianapolis. While the road wasn’t always smooth, the Tigers proved that they have the heart of a champion, capping off the year as the 2026 National Invitational Tournament (NIT) Champions.
A Season of Transition
The year began with a massive shift as Bruce Pearl stepped away from the program, leaving Steven Pearl to take the reins as a first-year head coach. Despite the “Nepo Baby” chatter from critics, SP held the locker room together, kept the roster out of the transfer portal, and established a culture of physical, defensive-minded basketball.
The Tigers showed flashes of elite potential early with wins over Oregon and St. John’s in Vegas, though they struggled against high-caliber opponents like Michigan, Arizona, and Purdue.
Stars of the Show
Several players stepped up to define this era of Auburn basketball:
- Kevin Overton (Tournament MVP): The breakout star of the year. Overton was the definition of “clutch,” hitting the game-tying shot against Georgia and shooting a blistering 41.3% from three. He has already announced his return for his senior season.
- Tahad Pettiford: Taking on the point guard mantle, Pettiford averaged 15.4 points per game. While learning to be a primary ball-handler, he showed significant growth in his defensive vigor and court vision.
- Keyshawn Hall: The leading scorer (19.3 PPG) and top rebounder (7.1 RPG) was an absolute problem for opposing defenses. Though his “experiment” at Auburn had ups and downs, his scoring prowess kept the Tigers in many games.
- Elijah Freeman: A “tenacious defender” who averaged 9 points and 5.2 rebounds, Freeman became a vital piece of the starting rotation before a late-season knee injury.
The Road to the NIT Title
After a tough SEC stretch where the team narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers didn’t sulk. Instead, they went to Indianapolis and played like it mattered. Winning five straight games, including a gritty championship victory over Tulsa, Auburn showed the country that they were a cut above the rest of the field.
With a solid core of Overton, Pettiford, Freeman, and Sebastian Williams-Adams potentially returning, the foundation is set for a massive 2026-27 campaign.
