Auburn vs South Alabama: Why This Team Feels Different

I have watched Auburn football long enough to know when a team feels different. Heading into this game against South Alabama, the conversation isn’t just about whether Auburn can win. It’s about how good they can look doing it and whether they can keep stacking wins as Hugh Freeze builds momentum in year three.

South Alabama will enter Jordan-Hare with a quick-start reputation. The Jaguars have scored on their first possession twice already this season. Auburn, by contrast, has started slow. That creates an interesting opening script. Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin has already challenged his unit not to give up an early touchdown. If Auburn comes out locked in, it could get out of hand quickly.

What separates this Auburn team from the ones I’ve seen the past two years is the ability to answer back. Against Baylor, every time the Bears threw a punch, Auburn delivered one right back. That was not the case in 2022 or 2023 when momentum shifts often spelled disaster. This Auburn squad doesn’t flinch.

The difference starts with quarterback Jackson Arnold and wide receiver Cam Coleman. Arnold already looks like a steady hand in big moments, and Coleman’s size and athleticism make him a nightmare matchup. Plays like the scramble and comeback route against Ball State showed me Auburn finally has the type of off-script chemistry that defines great teams.

The defense is every bit as important. Sylvester Smith was everywhere last week, laying big hits and setting a tone. Auburn has been one of the top rushing defenses in the country through two games. That is a foundation that travels and helps in the SEC gauntlet.

When I think back to 2010, everyone knew Auburn would hand the ball to Cam Newton and nobody could stop it. Coleman isn’t Newton, but he is the type of player who can tilt the field every snap. Hugh Freeze has been clear: the scheme matters less if players win their matchups. Auburn has players who can do that now.

The Baylor win also keeps looking better. Baylor bounced back to beat SMU, proving that Auburn didn’t just beat a name brand. They beat a real football team on the road in Week One. That’s significant.

The question now is whether Auburn avoids the dreaded letdown. The Oklahoma game looms large. Still, Auburn can’t look past South Alabama. These are the games Hugh Freeze simply cannot afford to drop. Auburn fans remember the Vanderbilt loss all too well from last year.

The expectation I have for Freeze in year three is eight or nine wins. The roster is too talented for less. The star power is obvious. The defense is playing with attitude. And if Arnold and Coleman continue to click, Auburn is going to be a problem in the SEC this season.

This Auburn South Alabama challenge is about more than just one game. It’s about momentum, confidence, and proving Auburn has turned a corner. The path to Norman next week runs through South Alabama, and Auburn needs to handle business in Jordan-Hare first.
