Tigers’ Rushing Attack Sends Statement in Season Opener vs. Baylor

Auburn dominated Baylor with its run game on Friday and in doing so, the Tigers sent a powerful message in their season opener. Few expected the offensive line to look this sharp on the road in week one, but Auburn’s front controlled the line of scrimmage from start to finish, paving the way for nearly 300 rushing yards in a 38-24 victory.

The offensive line was the story of the night. After years of inconsistency, Auburn finally has a group capable of setting the tone up front. Jeremiah Wright played with a mean streak, Mason Murphy graded out as one of the best performers on the field, and the entire unit showed balance in both run blocking and pass protection. For the first time in years, Auburn fans can watch third and short situations with confidence, knowing the Tigers can simply line up and overpower a defense.

That confidence carried into the red zone, where Auburn consistently finished drives. Too often in past seasons, red-zone trips ended in field goals or stalled possessions. Against Baylor, the Tigers leaned on their ground game to punch the ball in when it mattered most.

Jackson Arnold elevated the offense even further with his legs. By design, Auburn leaned heavily on quarterback runs, and Arnold delivered with explosive speed and decisive cuts. What makes his performance impressive is that most of his 16 rushing attempts were not broken plays but called runs — a sign of trust from Hugh Freeze in his young quarterback. Arnold now leads the SEC in rushing after week one, a stat that reflects both his athleticism and the dominance of Auburn’s line.

While the receivers had a quieter night, their presence was still felt. Cam Coleman’s contested catch downfield reminded everyone why he is considered one of the top talents in the country. Eric Singleton Jr.’s motion and route running created space for Arnold’s touchdowns, even if the stat sheet doesn’t tell the full story. Those assists will become more critical as Auburn faces defenses that refuse to be bullied at the line of scrimmage.

Baylor provided little resistance, but Oklahoma looms. The Sooners boast a defense that held Alabama out of the end zone last season, and their physicality will demand a more balanced approach. The next two games against Ball State and South Alabama will give Auburn a chance to fine-tune its passing attack. Hugh Freeze has a chance to put routes on tape without revealing too much of the playbook before Norman.

Fans should appreciate how Auburn controlled the tempo at Baylor. That seven-minute, 12-play touchdown drive in the fourth quarter was as demoralizing as it gets for a home defense. When an opponent knows the run is coming and still can’t stop it, that’s a true identity-builder for a football team.

If Auburn continues to blend Arnold’s decision-making with the offensive line’s power, the run game will remain one of the most dangerous in the SEC. But to keep winning against elite opponents, the Tigers must expand their aerial attack and trust their talented receivers to make more big plays.

The season is young, but the foundation looks solid. Auburn dominates Baylor run, and in doing so, opened the door for what could be a breakthrough year under Freeze.
