War Rapport Roundtable: Final thoughts before Auburn’s season opener

Today is the day.

The long-awaited season opener between Auburn and Baylor will kickoff at 7 p.m. tonight at McLane Stadium.

With both squads looking to start their respective seasons off in the win column, here’s some final thoughts from some of our staff, with score predictions and analysis:

Logan Fowler: Auburn 28-24

“All offseason, those in and around the Auburn program have raved about the upgraded personnel. Now it’s time to see the new pieces in action.

“It won’t be easy. McLane Stadium – despite its low capacity of 45,150 – will be rocking with Baylor fans eager to make some noise in the Big 12. Baylor head coach Dave Aranda, a defensive mastermind, has had all offseason to prepare for what Auburn may throw at him defensively, though the same could be said for Hugh Freeze. The Bears’ offensive is full of veteran talent, led by Sawyer Robertson undercenter, and returnees from a season ago where they finished 20th in total offense and reeled off six wins to end the regular season.

“However, I still believe Auburn holds the talent advantage at nearly every position. I believe the Tigers will control the trenches on both sides, and boast more talent on the perimeter on either side of the ball. If Auburn can establish its run game in the early goings, allowing Jackson Arnold to settle in and distribute the ball to his playmakers outside, the Tigers could leave Waco with copious amounts of confidence.”

Ike Jones: Auburn 31-24

“This will come down to who’s offensive line can win. Each team wants to establish the run. If one does it more consistently than the other, they will win the game.

“I expect Baylor to be fired up for this game. They have high expectations for the season and there is a bit of a manufactured chip on their shoulders. They had the better season last year and could contend for the Big 12, the Heisman dark horse candidate at QB, and still are not favored by Vegas. Couple that with this being an SEC opponent, Baylor players and fans feel as if they need to prove something. Auburn needs to be prepared for that.

“At the end of the day, I trust Auburn’s defense more than I trust Baylor’s to get that crucial stop needed. I trust Auburn’s overall talent, more than I trust Baylor’s. IF Jackson Arnold and the rest of the Tigers can protect the football, this should be a win for Auburn, but I don’t expect a blow out. Baylor has a good team and a good QB. Auburn will have to earn this one.”
