After a bounce back run, that included Auburn’s first time hosting a Super Regional, Auburn baseball comes up short against Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers were able to sweep Auburn to advance to Omaha.
The first game of the series had a little bit of everything. Coastal got out to a lead and, after a rain delay, Auburn came storming back to tie the game. The Tigers had a final opportunity in the bottom of the 9th inning to win in walk-off fashion but came up empty, despite having a runner in scoring position. Eventually, the game winner came off of the bat of Cadine Bodine, the dynamic catcher for the Chants in the top of the 10th inning.
Game 2 was a pitcher’s dual throughout the majority. Each team struggled to advance runners to finish off innings. Eventually, Coastal was able to break through and took a 4-1 lead that they never relinquished. Ultimately, the pitching staff for the Chants seemed to overwhelm the Tigers.
This game marks the end of a fabulous career for a few seniors and Ike Irish. The foundation of what those players set for Auburn Baseball and the way they stuck with the team in this era of the transfer portal is to be commended. Ike Irish had plenty of opportunities to jump ship and decided to stay. He is sure to be rewarded his name being mentioned in high regard around Auburn Sport circles. Irish is also sure to be a high draft pick for the MLB.
Despite the disappointing end to the season, there is plenty of reason for optimism around the program. Coach Butch Thompson has really put together an impressive roster and the support from Athletic Director John Cohen is evident. There is good young talent on the Auburn roster and Coach Thompson and staff are already making moves in the transfer portal. I expect the momentum to continue for Auburn Baseball heading into the coming seasons.
