The Auburn Tigers women’s basketball team delivered an impressive performance Saturday, securing a dominant win over the Florida Gators, 74-51. The victory was marked by stifling defense, as the Tigers bounce back from the loss to Mississippi State.
Deyona Gaston Shines Again
Deyona Gaston solidified her reputation as one of the premier scorers in the country with another stellar outing. The senior forward led Auburn with 18 points . Gaston’s ability to score in the post, attack off the dribble, and knock down mid-range jumpers made her an unstoppable force for the Gators’ defense.
“Deyona’s consistency is what sets her apart,” said Auburn head coach Johnnie Harris. “She’s not just talented, but she works hard and knows how to step up in big moments.”
Yuting Deng Provides Offensive Spark
Newcomer Yuting Deng had her breakout game for the Tigers, scoring 16 points and hitting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Deng’s ability to stretch the floor gave Auburn a new dimension offensively, forcing Florida to defend the perimeter while also contending with Gaston in the paint.
“Yuting’s shooting was huge for us tonight,” said Harris. “She gives us versatility and makes it harder for teams to key in on one player.”
Deng’s hot shooting also opened up driving lanes for her teammates, further enhancing Auburn’s offensive efficiency.
Mar’Shaun Bostic: The Floor General
Mar’Shaun Bostic’s playmaking was instrumental in Auburn’s success, as the senior guard dished out a career-high 11 assists. Bostic’s court vision and decision-making kept the offense flowing, consistently setting up her teammates for high-percentage looks.
“Mar’Shaun is our engine,” Gaston said post-game. “She sees the floor so well and makes everyone around her better.”
Bostic’s contributions weren’t limited to passing. She also added 9 points and 2 steals, showcasing her ability to impact the game in multiple ways.
Defense Leads the Way
While Auburn’s offensive stars shined, it was their suffocating defense that set the tone. The Tigers forced Florida into 24 turnovers and held the Gators to just 34.8% shooting from the field. Auburn’s defensive intensity disrupted Florida’s rhythm.
“Defense is always our priority,” said Harris. “When we defend like that, it makes everything else easier.”
Looking Ahead
With the win, Auburn improves to 11-10 overall. Next up, the Tigers face a tough road test against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
