With Calzada fading into the background, TJ Finley seems to be in control in the QB race with a fast-improving Robby Ashford breathing down his neck.
The final scrimmage of Auburn Football’s fall camp took place Friday afternoon, and the reports were pretty definitive: It’s TJ Finley in the lead followed closely by Robby Ashford. It comes as a bit of a surprise considering the sentiments this offseason were overwhelmingly in favor of Zach Calzada winning the job. But that hasn’t been the case, as both Eric Kiesau and Bryan Harsin have been effusive in their praise of TJ Finley for his command, awareness, and maturity in fall camp.
He practiced as the starter for South Carolina, Bama, three weeks leading into a bowl game…was practically getting starter reps all spring. So he’s got about, what, 7 [or] 8 weeks of lead-in, not to mention whatever he learned of the offense before he actually got to that point late last season? Of course it makes sense that he has more command. Of course he has a better understanding of the offense. Of course he knows what they expect.

Is Calzada still ailing from last year’s injuries and offseason surgeries? How important should the finer points of quarterbacking be when Auburn just needs to win games?
