SEC Power Rankings: Week 7

A look at the current power rankings of the country’s most powerful football conference going into Week 7.

After what felt like an eternity of an offseason, we are already halfway through 2022-23 college football season. With that said, here are the latest SEC power rankings going into week 7.

Week 7 Power Rankings

  1. Georgia
  2. Alabama
  3. Tennessee
  4. Ole Miss
  5. Florida
  6. Mississippi State
  7. Kentucky
  8. South Carolina
  9. Texas A&M
  10. LSU
  11. Arkansas
  12. Auburn
  13. Missouri
  14. Vanderbilt

Two of the top 4 teams will collide this weekend, as Alabama travels to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. I believe that the health of Bryce Young’s shoulder will ultimately determine the outcome of this top 10 matchup. Although Jalen Milroe is a very talented QB, he did account for 3 turnovers in his home debut against the Aggies last weekend. Alabama will need its reigning Heisman winner back for this road trip if they want to remain undefeated after this weekend. In just year 2 under Josh Heupel, Tennessee appears to have already climbed out of the SEC’s cellar. Ending a 15-year drought to its cross-divisional rival this weekend would be program changing.

Mississippi State is currently 5-1 and is currently trending upward, with back-to-back wins against Texas A&M and Arkansas. While those two programs are not very good this year, not many people had the Bulldogs sitting at 3 rd in the SEC West at the midway point of the regular season. They still have a brutal schedule ahead of them, however, as they play at Kentucky this weekend, at Bama the following week, at home against Georgia later in the season and the final regular season game at Ole Miss. We’ll soon find out more about Mike Leach’s team in the coming weeks.

At the moment, the only bright spot in the bottom 7 is South Carolina, who’s currently sitting at 4-2. The first half of this season has been disappointing at best for the remaining programs. LSU is currently in a rebuild year, A&M and Arkansas aren’t living up to their preseason hype, and Auburn appears to be as bad as most prognosticators predicted they would be months ago. The season isn’t over yet, but if some of these programs don’t reverse course soon, expect for some coaching seats to start warming up. For one program in particular, things look so bleak that a coaching change now appears to be imminent.
