How is the quarterback room shaping up heading into the summer?
With Payton Thorne now on campus, the “Quarterback Battle” can begin. Now, is there a legitimate competition at QB? No, Auburn wouldn’t have brought in a seasoned P5 QB just to sit the bench. Payton Thorne is their guy, but he still has to earn it in the summer and fall.
Payton Thorne’s floor is higher than Auburn’s last ceiling.

Can coaches perceptions of players change? Absolutely but for Thorne to lose his job it will take an immensely underwhelming Summer and Fall. Hugh Freeze constructed this roster around having a strong passing attack. Robby Ashford doesn’t provide that, he’s one of the most dynamic runners in the game but he has shown next-to-nothing in the passing game consistently.
It’s likely that Freeze and staff will put together a package for Robby in the fall. It wouldn’t be much, other than a few touches in the red zone. Whether Robby is able to beat out Payton Thorne or not, fans can rest peacefully knowing Auburn has a better Quarterback room than their cross state rival.
