Xavier Atkins is Returning to the Plains

Auburn family, take a deep breath. In the chaotic world of the modern Transfer Portal, where things seem to be as chaotic as Christmas at the airport, with just as many coming and goings, Auburn got great news about someone staying put. This is a huge get for Alex Golesh.

Xavier “Deebo” Atkins is running it back.

On Wednesday, the All-American linebacker took to social media to shut down the rumors and confirm he’s staying on the Plains for the 2026 season. In an era where a breakout season usually leads to a bidding war, Deebo chose the orange and blue. This isn’t just a “roster retention” story; it’s a statement that DJ Durkin has truly built a rapport with his players. Atkins made it clear he wanted to return in the post-game of the Iron Bowl. He re-affirmed that commitment and Durkin is a big reason why.

The Stats Don’t Lie

Let’s be real: Deebo wasn’t just “good” in 2025—he was historic. He led the team with 84 tackles and paced the entire SEC with 17.0 tackles for loss. Throw in 9 sacks and that heart-stopping 73-yard interception return against Texas A&M, and you’re looking at the most productive Auburn linebacker since Karlos Dansby in 2003.

Losing that kind of production to the portal would have been a gut punch. Instead, Deebo is staying to anchor a defense that finally looks like it has its identity back under DJ Durkin.

The “Durkin Effect” is Real

Why does this matter so much? Because superstars like Deebo don’t stay for programs they don’t believe in. The defense was a main reason Auburn was able to be “close” last season. Under DJ Durkin, Linebacker play is CRUCIAL to success. By choosing to stay, Atkins is sending a flare out to every other player in the portal: Auburn is building something special. While we’ve seen some tough departures this week—seeing guys like Jay Crawford and Malcolm Simmons head for the exit hurts—having #17 back in the middle of the defense gives us a foundation to build on. It’s the kind of move that makes it a whole lot easier to recruit guys like Byrum Brown to come join the party.

So, buckle up, Auburn fans. The portal will keep spinning, but the heart of our defense is locked in.
