Why I Love Hugh Freeze’s Fire at Practice

A video went viral this week of Hugh Freeze tossing his visor after Jackson Arnold missed a read in practice. You’d think the man flipped a table the way folks are reacting. Some are saying he was too hard on Arnold. Others, over the past few weeks, have been grumbling that Freeze was being too soft. So which is it?

Here’s the truth: this is normal coaching. Every coach worth their paycheck gets heated when a mistake happens—especially one they’ve seen corrected before. That’s not panic, that’s accountability. And frankly, I love that Freeze showed it.

Now, I get the concerns. The prevailing narrative around Arnold, coming out of Oklahoma, is that he was too hesitant last season. Fans want him to rebuild his confidence, not have it chipped away. Fair point. But here’s why this moment mattered—Freeze knows the urgency of right now. Auburn has a real shot to make some noise this season, and Freeze is setting the tone. He’s not letting hesitation slide in practice, because hesitation in practice leads to hesitation on Saturdays.

What gets lost in the clip is that this was one play in an entire practice where Arnold had plenty of bright moments. And that’s the bigger picture: Freeze isn’t melting down, he’s raising the standard. He’s showing his QB and the whole team that “good enough” won’t cut it. That’s the fire that built Hugh Freeze’s reputation in the first place.

So no, I don’t see a coach on the hot seat panicking. I see a coach locked in, demanding the best, and refusing to let his team waste the opportunity in front of them. If you ask me, Auburn needs every ounce of that energy right now.
