The SEC showed up big during opening weekend, going 13-1 against non-conference opponents. While it can be tough to assess how good these teams really are in non-conference play, there were some teams that definitely passed the eye test.
After a historic 2021 season, which resulted in a national championship and 15 players drafted in the 2022 NFL draft, Georgia picked up right where it left off by dismantling Oregon 49-3. But what stood out the most in that game was the emergence of the Georgia passing attack led by Stetson Bennett. Time will tell if Georgia’s offense is for real. For now, they remain as the #2 in the conference…for now.
The other big winner was Florida, as they pulled off the 29-26 upset of the then #7 Utah Utes. That win bumped them up the rankings to #8.
That brings us to the only blemish during the SEC’s opening weekend: the LSU Tigers. Although, it’s just year 1 in the Brian Kelly era, many pundits, myself included, expected the Bayou Bengals to defeat FSU in a pseudo neutral site game at the Superdome. While it took a blocked extra point at the end of regulation, FSU was able to fight off a late game comeback by LSU to pull off the 24-23 upset. Going into the season, I gave LSU the benefit of the doubt by ranking them #8 in last week’s rankings. Thanks to FSU, the doubt has been removed as they are currently the 12th best team in the conference.
