Hugh Freeze has made Payton Thorne his starting quarterback Week 1 against UMass
After an entire offseason of competition, Michigan State Transfer, Payton Thorne emerged as the winner. The entrenched B1G QB will get the start week one for the Tigers. Ultimately the experience and arm talent was enough to beat out the dynamic potential of Robby Ashford.
I’m putting all my trust in Hugh Freeze’s evaluation of the quarterbacks

Payton Thorne is a good quarterback who can make the occasional poor decision. That is more valuable to Hugh Freeze than an average quarterback who can make the occasional big play. While the Tigers have improved their roster drastically this offseason, there are going to be close games in the 4th quarter where you simply have to make the right throws.
Robby is a dynamic talent who will see the field. However, he simply didn’t show enough consistency as a leader and his arm didn’t take a drastic enough leap to make up for that. Coach Hugh Freeze has been insistent that there will be a package for Robby to remain a factor for the Tigers this fall. The offense has a lot unanswered questions. Despite Thorne being named the starter, it seems like quarterback is still amongst those uncertainties.
