Looking ahead to the back half of the season, how has the Tiger’s defense performed?
Defensive Backs
Injuries have been one of the only knocks on the back end of Ron Roberts’ unit. Keionte Scott and Nehemiah Pritchett have played sparsely. While Nehemiah has played in the last two contests, it’s unlikely to see Keionte back for some time. The emergence of Jaylin Simpson as the top safety in the nation was not one I expected. His four interceptions and ball hawking ability in between the numbers is lethal. While issues tackling have emerged from D.J. James, he remains a solid cover corner alongside Kayin Lee. Thus far, a solid coverage unit has earned a B+ grade.
Linebackers
Josh Aldridge was expected to put a mediocre product on the field. Austin Keys looked promising coming from Ole Miss everyone else looked below average. However they’ve been the star of the defense. The former scout team linebacker, Eugene Asante, has been great. Without this second level Auburn cannot generate pressure, issues are apparent in coverage but they’ve been strong overall. They’ve earned an A grade.
Defensive Line
The front four has been lacking this season. Keldric Faulk is a great piece for the future but isn’t ready for SEC football. Marcus Harris has been a bright spot in a dark cloud up front, especially in the most recent contest against Georgia. A lack of consistent pressure brings down the overall grade to a B-.
Defensive Coordinator
Ron Roberts is the best hire Hugh Freeze made, outside of Cadillac’s retention. His transformation of transfers to a top ten defense is admirable. His scheme has been consistently up to the challenge and has earned an A grade.
