Bringing It All Together

Fan sentiment is rising along with the early recruiting results, but can Hugh Freeze keep it going?

Hugh Freeze has made an early impact on Auburn by retaining the right coaches, closing strong on Early Signing Day, and pulling an immense amount of talent out of the transfer portal.

There was plenty of room for improvement for Auburn Football when comparing its last two head coaches. Gus Malzahn struggled to recruit and develop key positions and Bryan Harsin struggled to do…well, almost everything. While there was certainly hope that Hugh Freeze could right the ship – and measured optimism that it could happen quickly – very few Auburn faithful could have predicted that he’d land the #1 transfer portal class and close the early signing period with several flips.

The question then becomes, “How?” How did Hugh Freeze turn an immense void of offensive line talent and dead momentum on the recruiting trail into 8 signed offensive linemen, flips from the likes of Ohio St and LSU, and a jolt of energy into the program that seemed impossible in October? Auburn Sports‘s Jay G Tate joins The Morning Drop to shed some light on what’s transpired in Auburn since Freeze got hired.

He’s got some dudes that work harder. He’s got some dudes that know more players. […] There was a fault line in the last staff. […] There were some ideological differences. Now with this staff there are some guys that are Freeze guys and then not-Freeze guys, but he got them together because he knows how to lead people.

There’s no doubt that the outlook has improved among the fanbase, but promise isn’t tangible. Freeze has hit his first two goals out of the park with Early Signing Day and the first transfer portal period, but are those enough to satisfy the fanbase until Fall? What’s the next measurable step for Hugh Freeze and his staff to tell if Auburn is still headed in the right direction?
