Tahaad Pettiford’s Return is A BIG DEAL

Let me tell y’all something—Tahaad Pettiford coming back to Auburn is a big deal. A real big deal. I know there were some folks who thought he might test the NBA waters after showing out during camp evaluations, and honestly, I wouldn’t have blamed him. But on the final day to decide, he made the call: he’s coming back to the Plains.

And that move, in my opinion, changes everything for Auburn’s 2025-26 season.

He’s Not Just Back—He’s Ready to Lead

Let’s go back a second. When Pettiford arrived, Bruce Pearl was saying he wanted him to be more of a scoring guard—not necessarily the guy running the offense. But plans change. Last season, due to some inconsistency at the point, Pettiford stepped into the lead guard role—and he held his own. I won’t say it was the perfect fit, but the kid handled it.

Now, with a year under his belt, the reins are fully his. He’s the leader. This season, the offense is going to run through him—and that’s exactly how it should be.

Built for the Modern Game

Here’s why I’m excited: I expect this year’s Auburn team is going to be pick-and-roll heavy. Pettiford is tailor-made for that style of play. He can’t be sagged off because he’ll hit the shot from 30 feet. You try to blitz the screen? He’s smart enough to read it and find the roller or the corner shooter. His passing’s better than he got credit for last year, too.

But let’s be clear—there are still areas to grow. I saw some struggles when defenses forced him to the sideline or blitzed him hard (just watch that Florida Final Four tape). That’s something he and this coaching staff will need to clean up. Keep those actions in the middle of the floor, give him two-way options, and this offense is going to hum.

Who’s Backing Him Up?

Here’s the other layer: depth. Last season, Auburn didn’t have enough guard depth to survive foul trouble or injuries. Pettiford had to play a ton of minutes. This year, we’re bringing in Kaden Magwood, a freshman who reminds me a lot of Tahaad stylistically—good size, solid athlete, three-level scorer. If he’s ready, he can ease some of that pressure and even give us dual playmaker lineups.

It’s still a gamble, relying on a true freshman as your primary backup at point, but Kaden has the tools.

The Hall + Pettiford Duo Could Be Nasty

Now let’s talk about something I think is flying under the radar—Keyshawn Hall and Pettiford as a two-man game.

Keyshawn is that big-body forward who can pick-and-pop, roll hard, crash the boards, and even space the floor with the three. Pair that with Pettiford’s shiftiness and shooting? Man, that combo is going to give teams problems. Both these guys had legit NBA draft grades, and both came back. That tells me they’re hungry—to win and to elevate their stock.

I’d bet a good chunk of this offseason is going to revolve around figuring out how to maximize those two guys. And rightly so.

Final Thoughts: This Is Pettiford’s Team

There’s no doubt in my mind—this team goes as Tahaad Pettiford goes. We’ve got a totally revamped roster with only one returning player from last year. There’s going to be a learning curve. Chemistry needs to be built. But when you’ve got a playmaker like Pettiford leading the charge, you’ve got a shot every night.

His decision to come back wasn’t just good for Auburn—it gave this team an identity.
