Pearl breaks down Johni Broome’s impact, roster turnover, and how Auburn is reloading for another deep run.
Talking with Steven Pearl was a reminder of how high the bar has been raised for Auburn basketball. Coming off a Final Four run and a record 32 wins, I asked him straight up how he views last season in context—and he didn’t hesitate.
“That’s the best team in the history of Auburn basketball.”
From the Maui Invitational to beating Houston and Purdue, to dominating the SEC, the team exceeded expectations and delivered one of the most complete seasons we’ve ever seen on the Plains.
We spent time discussing Johni Broome, and how vital his decision to return was. Pearl called him:
“One of the top three greatest transfers in college basketball history.”
But with Broome and most of the roster now gone, Steven made it clear: this is not a rebuild. With Tahaad Pettiford as the lone returner and 10+ new players on board, the work is already underway to build chemistry and teach the Auburn system from scratch. But the next chapter is already underway. Auburn’s coaching staff faces the challenge of building chemistry with a brand-new group of players, including a mix of incoming freshmen and international talent.
“We’re teaching the basics right now. It’s a crash course in Auburn basketball for these guys,” Pearl noted. “But we’ve got pieces, and we’re excited about the potential.”
Pearl also spoke candidly about the changing landscape of college basketball, including the House settlement and future roster caps that could reshape how programs approach walk-ons and development players.
Despite the challenges, the message from Coach Pearl is clear: Auburn isn’t rebuilding—it’s reloading.
He also touched on the impact of upcoming NCAA changes—namely the House settlement and future scholarship caps—that could drastically affect how they manage development and scout team roles.
“We’re going to look at it more as an opportunity than a negative.”
