A lot of Auburn fans are asking a fair question after the Arizona and Michigan losses:
“Would Bruce Pearl have gotten blown out like this?”
But that question misses the truth that’s sitting right in front of us:
This roster was always going to be a challenge — for anyone.
This Isn’t About Coaching Ability
Steven Pearl had a nearly impossible offseason assignment:
- Entire roster turnover
- No established defensive anchor
- No continuity
- A small-ball roster without elite shooters
- An EXTREMELY tough schedule (in both level of opponent and time-table)
Whether Bruce or Steven coached this team, the issues would be identical right now:
Chemistry, trust, and execution.
The Real Question: Can Steven Build the Buy-In?
This season isn’t about Final Fours.
It’s about finding an identity.
And this is the kind of team that tests a new head coach’s voice.
Auburn’s effort swings drastically based on how the offense flows. That’s a mentality issue — not a skill issue. Steven is now tasked with teaching:
- Shot discipline
- Ball movement
- Defensive consistency
- Emotional maturity
The question isn’t whether Steven Pearl is capable.
It’s whether he can get this brand-new roster to absorb his voice fast enough to compete at a high level by February.
Early Signs Say Yes
Even with the blowout losses:
- Auburn beat NC State, beat quality mid-majors, and pushed Houston to the brink.
- Auburn runs good sets when composed. The start seem to buy into the staff. That is evidenced by the way they bounced back against St. John’s the night after the Michigan game. They respond to the tough coaching. It does not give the feel of a team that has quit, already.
- The mistakes are correctable, not catastrophic.
Everything they want is still out in front of them.
Auburn’s Future Is Still in Good Hands
The early bumps aren’t a referendum on the program — they’re a reminder that rebuilding years require patience, even for programs with high expectations.
Steven Pearl has shown he can lead.
Now, the roster has to show it can follow.
