The schedule-makers haven’t been kind to Auburn this season, and Saturday’s trip to Gainbridge Fieldhouse was another loss with a big margin. In a physical matchup that Trey Kaufman-Renn (TKR) and the Boilermakers clearly took personally, No. 21 Auburn fell 88-60 to No. 6 Purdue. Kaufman-Renn, when asked about the game afterwards said that he had it circled on his calendar since last season’s loss to the Tigers in Birmingham. In fact, he said he wished they would have won by 50!
While the final score hurts, Coach Steven Pearl remained defiant about his team’s trajectory. “We’ve played four Final Four teams so far,” Pearl noted, highlighting a brutal early-season slate that has seen the Tigers play seven of their first 12 games away from Neville Arena.
The Silver Lining: Kevin Overton’s Growth
If there was a bright spot in the Indianapolis gloom, it was Kevin Overton. After taking what Pearl described as “really hard coaching” during the week, the junior responded with a game-high 22 points.
Overton was the engine for the Tigers, playing 36 minutes and knocking down four triples. It was his second 20-point performance of the season, proving he can produce even when the rest of the offense goes cold.
By The Numbers
Despite the lopsided score, the Tigers actually took care of the rock. Auburn committed a season-low two turnovers in the first half and finished with only 10 for the game. However, the Boilermakers’ “offensive wizardry” and size advantage proved too much to overcome:
- Paint Dominance: Purdue outscored Auburn 40-20 in the paint.
- Second Chances: Despite Auburn winning the offensive glass (11-9), Purdue converted their opportunities into a 15-5 advantage in second-chance points.
- The Smith Factor: Purdue’s Braden Smith dismantled the defense with a season-high 14 assists.
Defensive Mixed Bag
The Tigers’ game plan successfully forced Purdue into taking more 3s. Unfortunately, other than Loyer, who went 0-7, the rest of the Boilermakers caught fire, combining to shoot a blistering 63.1% (12-of-19) from beyond the arc.
Looking Ahead: Battle Tested
Auburn (8-4) heads back to the Plains with their heads up. All four of their losses have come against Top-10 opponents (Arizona, Michigan, Purdue, and Houston).
“Our guys haven’t lost confidence,” Pearl said. “We’re battle-tested. I think we have a top 25 resume based on what we’ve already done.”
The Tigers will wrap up their non-conference schedule at Neville Arena on Monday, Dec. 29, against Queens. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. CT.
