Auburn football recruiting is moving like a runaway freight train right now, and the momentum isn’t slowing down anytime soon. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the trail, you already know the big news: 4-star safety Chance Gilbert has officially committed to the Auburn Tigers, bringing an elite defensive weapon to our 2027 recruiting class.
I sat down with my guy Phillip Dukes, a.k.a. “Dukes the Scoop,” on the Auburn Express to break down exactly what this means for our defense. Let me tell you right now, in the words of Dukes, “if you aren’t excited about this kid, you’re just hating.”
Here is why Chance Gilbert is the real deal and why his commitment is a massive statement win for Auburn.
Absolute Blazer: Football Instincts with Track Speed
When you turn on the film for Chance Gilbert, one word immediately jumps out: speed. True, unadulterated, game-changing speed.
We aren’t just talking about “football fast,” either. Gilbert is a verified track star out of Sharpsburg, Georgia. As a mere freshman, he was a Georgia state qualifier in the 100-meter dash. Georgia is easily one of the fastest, deepest states in the country for high school track, and Gilbert was out there flashing a blazing 10.57 in the 100m, a 22-second 200m, and a 51.48 in the 400m. Word on the street is he’s a 10.4 waiting to happen.
“This is a football player with track speed. Like he is out there. Absolute ball skills… impacting the game, high-pointing the football when he’s out there at DB. He’s a football player, but he’s a blazer.” — Ike Jones
Gilbert isn’t a track guy trying to play football; he is a violent, instinctive football player who happens to have track star wheels. He plays with his hair on fire, impacts all three phases of the game (including returning kicks and playing wide receiver), and isn’t afraid to mix it up physically.
The Ultimate Defensive Chess Piece for DJ Durkin
Dukes and I talked about who Gilbert reminds us of, and the comparison that keeps coming up is former Auburn standout Jaylin Simpson, specifically Simpson during his senior year when he was completely erasing matching routes and flying all over the gridiron. Local scouts back in Georgia are even comparing his cerebral approach to a young Eric Berry when he was dominating at Creekside.
For defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, Gilbert is the ultimate luxury asset. Durkin loves to bring pressure, use his linebackers, and dial up aggressive zero-blitz coverages. To do that successfully in the SEC, you need a safety who can play “on the roof” and completely erase the deep ball.
Because Gilbert possesses that rare 10.5-range makeup speed, an offense cannot stack him or blow past him. You can leave him at the top of a Cover 3 system, forget about him, and know he has the sideline-to-sideline range to turn deep shots into turnovers. Furthermore, his swift footwork means Durkin can confidently slide him down into the slot to guard shifty SEC wideouts or tight ends in man coverage without worrying about getting beat over the top.
A Massive Statement Win Over Georgia
Let’s be completely honest: for a while, everybody thought Gilbert was a lock for the Georgia Bulldogs. The word on the recruiting trail was that Kirby Smart and his staff viewed him in the exact same mold as a KJ Bolden-type player.
Auburn safety coach Tim Banks went right into the heart of Georgia and pulled off a massive recruiting heist. Pulling a borderline top-50 national player (ranked as high as No. 55 nationally and the No. 4 safety in the composite ratings) out of the Atlanta area is proof-positive that our recruiting machine is operating at an elite level.
Gilbert is slightly frame-light right now at 5’11” and 175 pounds. When he gets into an SEC weight room, fills out his frame, and learns to come downhill with that massive speed against SEC size, he is going to be absolutely golden.
The modern SEC demands elite speed, and the coaching staff is building a roster explicitly designed to play fast, loose, and cause absolute havoc. Chance Gilbert is the epitome of a havoc creator.
The eagle emojis are flying all over social media for a reason, Tiger fans. Believe the hype.
