In addition to a heralded incoming HS class and a celebrated haul in the transfer portal, there are a slew of 2nd year players who have been in the Auburn Football program for a year and are looking to make their presence felt. Today, the focus is on defensive players.
While the previous staff didn’t do enough to fill the roster with impact players, the players they brought in have been impactful. From Vanderbilt transfer Donovan Kaufman to DL standout Marcus Harris on defense to Robby Ashford and last-minute pick-up Jarquez Hunter, there were plenty of players who have produced in their first two seasons. Which begs the question: Who will shine in their second season at Auburn?
Focusing on the defensive side of the ball, there are plenty of names that could be big impact players. DJ James had an excellent first year on the plains, and a defensive front causing more pressure could make his 2nd year even better. Jayson Jones worked through injury to play all season and could be even better coming into the season healthy. DL Jeffrey M’ba came in with much hype, but not much opportunity to play as he continued to develop. Cayden Bridges, Caleb Wooden, and Marquise Gilbert all have the talent to be difference makers at Safety, but none of them got the snaps to do so.
With all the breakout potential for 2nd year players on defense, who stands to have the biggest impact on defense in 2023? Is it a redshirt freshman player or a transfer player with more experience?
