You, the fans, have spoken, and Robby Ashford has been selected as the Player of the Game for Mercer.
We got our first glimpse of Robby Ashford in an Auburn uniform during a real game, and he did not disappoint. He took the RPO shotgun snap on 1st & 10 and turned it into a quick 8 yard gain. He does a great job of reading the linebacker and cutting inside the kickout block from John-Samuel Shenker.
As exciting as it was to see the quickness of Ashford on display in that first play, it pales in comparison to the electricity displayed on this 49 yard burst up the sideline. Again, we see his speed and quickness on display, as he takes the RPO and surges past Mercer defenders and nearly breaks it for a touchdown.
This is a bit of creativity from offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau. Robby lines up in the slot and takes a speed sweep which transitions into an option pitch to Tank Bigsby. Bigsby does the rest but it was nice to see the offense having some unique twists and Robby being used in a variety of ways.
Now, we have seen his legs on display but the clincher for most fans would be “can he throw?” The emphatic answer to that is “absolutely!” Robby unleashes a 56-yard bomb to Ja’Varrius Johnson.
Having one nice throw does not make one a quarterback, but how about 2? Robby comes back with a really nice seam route throw to Shenker for the first down. It shows great touch, over the top of the linebacker and into the hands of the senior tight end for a 23-yard gain.
