Auburn has landed a major commitment from in-state talent, 4-star linebacker/edge rusher Jaquez Wilkes of Wadley, Alabama. Announced on Monday, July 21, 2025, Wilkes chose the Tigers over elite programs including Alabama, Miami, Texas A&M, and Florida State.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and around 220 pounds, Wilkes brings a dynamic blend of size, speed, and athleticism to Auburn’s 2026 recruiting class. While a two-way standout in high school — earning a 1A state title as a junior — Auburn coaches envision him flourishing at middle linebacker.
“It’s home and I have great relationships with the coaches,” Wilkes said at his commitment ceremony. “Being able to have this level of football beside my house, this close to home and without having to travel, I can’t beat it.”
Another key factor in his decision was Auburn’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, DJ Durkin. “Coach Durkin played a major role in my commitment,” Wilkes explained. “He’s a great guy. He’s honest and truthful and a hell of a coach. I don’t have anything bad to say about him. Him being my position coach and also the defensive coordinator played a big role, too.”
Wilkes also voiced confidence in head coach Hugh Freeze’s rebuilding process. “It’s a growing team since he’s been there,” he said. “He’s building it up. I believe in him and the next couple of years.”
Wilkes becomes Auburn’s 11th commitment in the 2026 recruiting cycle and the second linebacker to pledge. His decision also sends a positive signal for Auburn’s momentum in-state, as the Tigers look to build a top-tier defense for upcoming seasons.
