Is Freeze Smart to Take It Easy on Arnold?

As Auburn prepares for the start of Fall Camp, the focus has zeroed in on Coach Hugh Freeze’s approach to managing his newly anointed starting quarterback, Jackson Arnold. According to reports, Freeze has asked defensive coordinator DJ Durkin to “take it easy” on Arnold during practice sessions to ensure the quarterback leaves each day with his confidence intact.

This revelation has sparked a debate among fans and analysts: is this a strategic move to build Arnold’s swagger before the season, or does it hint at underlying concerns about his readiness to lead Auburn’s offense in 2025?

From the outset, Freeze named Arnold the starter, bypassing a traditional quarterback competition. The options for Auburn at QB this Spring were slim. Freshman, Deuce Knight had a strong spring, but Arnold was clearly the guy. Ashton Daniels arrived this summer and may be able to push Arnold a bit more. However, it’s Arnold’s just to lose. He was even held out of the spring game due to a minor hamstring issue, reinforcing Auburn’s commitment to protecting their QB1.

Ultimately, the notion of scaling back defensive intensity in practice has drawn criticism. “You’re building confidence in a guy that should already have it,” said Thrift Beringer during a recent segment on The Auburn Express. “If Jackson Arnold needs his defense to pull punches to feel good about himself, what happens when Baylor comes full speed week one?”

This Make Sense

Let’s call this what it is, a HUGH overreaction. Here is why I am ok with this approach. Let’s remember, Jackson Arnold, though in his 3rd year in college, is entering his second season at a presumptive starter. He did not even get the full season last season. So, he has not even started a full season. That one partial season, was in the disastrous situation at Oklahoma. Rebuilding his confidence would be a good thing. While they are getting the fundamentals of the offense together, it is not the time to complicate the defensive looks.

Also, not every QB progresses at the same rate. Coach Hugh Freeze would not be wise to toss him into the fire while he is learning. He just went through this with Payton Thorne. If you recall, Thorne had a tough time picking things up initially with Auburn. Freeze had to continuously scale back the offense. He is deciding to go the other route this time. Put a small amount on the QB’s plate and slowly add more.

However, many wonder why this messaging was shared publicly, particularly during SEC Media Days. I think this is a valid thing. I am not sure this needed to be said. “Why put that out there?” Mike G asked. “Now, if Arnold struggles against Baylor, fans will question whether he was truly ready.”

Auburn’s defense, especially the secondary, is poised to be one of the nation’s best, which may make practice especially challenging for Arnold. But as Freeze’s media comments circulate, questions grow about messaging and transparency, especially for a program looking to rebound from consecutive losing seasons.

Fall Camp will is here. Now is the time to turn up the pressure on Arnold. If Freeze still needs to “go easy” on his new QB, then there is cause for concern. Regardless, expectations are high, and all eyes will be on Arnold and Freeze when Auburn faces Baylor to kick off the season.
