Hugh Freeze Has to Deliver in Year 3 — And It Starts With Winning

Auburn Tigers running back Damari Alston (0) runs the ball into the end zone for a touchdown as Auburn Tigers take on Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024. Auburn Tigers defeated Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 48-14.

Expectations are sky-high on the Plains heading into the 2025 season. Auburn football is positioned with elite talent, a favorable schedule, and recruiting momentum—yet the program still finds itself in a holding pattern when it comes to results. Two seasons into Hugh Freeze’s tenure, the Tigers are still below .500 on the field. Hugh Freeze has to deliver

Year 3 is no longer about building. It’s about proving. The “honeymoon phase” of a new coaching staff has ended. The time to produce meaningful wins and define the Freeze era has arrived.

Hugh Freeze Has to Deliver…The Rebuild Is Over. The Results Must Follow.

Hugh Freeze took over a depleted roster and immediately improved Auburn’s recruiting footprint. He flipped players, restocked talent, and pulled the Tigers back into national conversations. But foundation alone doesn’t win games. It must be built upon.

Despite the work done in the first two seasons, the product on the field has not matched the hype. Recruiting for the 2026 class has slowed. High-profile decommitments are surfacing. And the reason is clear: top prospects want to play for winners.

Elite recruits are no longer swayed by sales pitches. They are looking for results—and Auburn must deliver them immediately.

If Hugh Freeze has to deliver Playoff Contention Is a Realistic Benchmark

With the expanded College Football Playoff format, the Tigers do not need to win the SEC to reach the postseason. Simply being one of the top five or six SEC teams could be enough. Auburn’s schedule supports the possibility.

Home games against Georgia and Alabama provide the perfect showcase. The defense, under D.J. Durkin, is expected to be one of the most physical units in the league. The offense features one of the best wide receiver rooms in the country. If quarterback Jackson Arnold performs as expected, Auburn can anticipate a postseason run.

There is no shortage of opportunity. What matters now is execution.

Exposure Matters — And Winning Drives It…so Hugh Freeze Has to Deliver

NIL plays a major role in recruiting, but once financial offers level out, the conversation shifts to exposure and development. The NFL does not only draft five-stars from powerhouse programs because of hype. They draft players who consistently perform in high-stakes games and receive national visibility.

Programs like Alabama, Georgia, and Texas have built reputations as NFL pipelines—not solely through recruiting, but through winning. High-profile wins lead to nationally televised matchups, primetime visibility, and stronger NFL evaluations.

Auburn must place itself back in that tier. And it won’t happen without victories that matter.

Talent Is No Longer the Problem

According to 247Sports’ 2024 Team Talent Composite, Auburn entered last season ranked 18th in overall roster strength. That’s ahead of Tennessee, Missouri, and Ole Miss—programs that either made the playoff or significantly outperformed Auburn in the standings.

So if talent isn’t the issue, the problem is clearly development and execution.

Jackson Arnold’s emergence as a starting quarterback will be critical. Surrounding him are elite weapons: Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons, Eric Singleton, and Damari Alston—all capable of making explosive plays. The pieces are in place. Auburn no longer has the excuse of a “talent gap.”

The difference between Auburn and Tennessee last year? One found its quarterback. The other didn’t.

Auburn Tigers wide receiver Cam Coleman (8) catches a deep pass before running it into the end zone for a touchdown as Auburn Tigers take on Texas A&M Aggies at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024. Hugh Freeze has to deliver with elite talent like Cam Coleman.

Recruiting Will Only Continue If Auburn Wins

Freeze acknowledged this dynamic himself. In his own words: “If we’re not in the top six or seven in recruiting by Year 3, we’ll all be looking for jobs.”

Auburn reached that mark in Year 2, but it remains to be seen whether the program can sustain it. The Tigers are still in the hunt for top 2026 recruits like Benjamin Russell (No. 11 overall), Anthony Jones (No. 41), and Hezekiah Harris (No. 103). But landing those types of players will require more than atmosphere and potential.

They need to see proof. Wins. Offensive rhythm. Playoff contention. Evidence that Auburn is closing the gap with the elite.

If Auburn finishes outside the Top 15 in recruiting while failing to show measurable improvement on the field, that momentum will be difficult to regain.

2025 Will Define Hugh Freeze’s Tenure

Everything is aligned for success. The schedule features multiple marquee games in front of the home crowd. The roster is deep with veteran talent and impact newcomers. The quarterback room has more upside than it has had in years. The defense appears poised to continue its ascent.

The only question now is whether Hugh Freeze and his staff can turn preparation into performance.

Coaching decisions, game planning, situational management—every detail will matter. The margin for error in the SEC is razor thin, but for Auburn to reclaim national standing, it must find ways to win close games and produce meaningful moments.

There is no room for excuses in Year 3. This is the point in a coach’s tenure where identity is formed—or failure is cemented.
