Hugh Freeze addresses the media after the 1st Spring Practice

Smell that? It’s pollen. The smell of Spring football is in there too, though.

It is officially time for Spring Football in Auburn. Coach Hugh Freeze addresses the media after the 1st Spring practice. Here are some of the highlights following that press conference.

Coach Freeze started the press conference complimenting the energy that the players brought to the first practice. The excitement was in the air around the facility. He was also complimentary of the way the coaches prepared and got the players ready. He also spoke about how much he enjoyed the new facility.

One of the interesting things that came out of the press conference was the coach’s insistence that he does not intend to utilize a depth chart during Spring. He intends to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to get reps and he is going to pay attention to the details for each player (particularly to he Quarterback position). The focus for him is going to be the “little things.”

The number one thing I want to get out of spring ball is that we understand that the little things really are the main thing.

– Coach Hugh Freeze

It is clear that Coach Freeze is hyper focused on the process. He is making changes to the way the team prepares and practices. It is going to be new for everyone. He talked about the tempo and effort that he wants to establish. Now, he will turn the team’s focus on maintaining the energy while fine tuning the precision. Coach Freeze was clear, the team and staff are not where they want to be yet, however, they are working to get everyone moving in the same direction and speaking with the same voice and cadence.

There are only 15 practices during Spring. Coach did talk about wanting to change the schedule next season. He wants more time to have the team with the strength staff before the practices start and not have the break between the first week and spring break. The schedule for that was set before he arrived but it is clear he wants to make some changes.
