Close To The Vest For A-Day

Nothing to see here, folks.

Coach Hugh Freeze has been candid in his assessment of his players so far this Spring, and that candidness has extended to the plans for Auburn’s A-Day. He does his best to temper expectations regarding what may be on display for the final day of Spring Football.

Hugh Freeze has been both honest and dodgy about the Spring QB battle between Robby Ashford, Holden Geriner, and TJ Finley. While he’s stated that his standards are high and that the room has some growing to do, he’s also praised each QB in their progress over the course of Spring practices. However, neither the QBs or WRs have garnered the praise the RB Jarquez Hunter has, suggesting that he’s not as confident in the passing game participants as he is in other positions.

He ends the Spring with more candor as he prepared the Auburn fanbase for a less than illuminating A-Day game. Citing concerns of competitive scouting, Hugh Freeze made sure to alert the fans that what they see on A-Day is not necessarily indicative of what things will look like in the fall. He even floated the idea of playing smaller in-state programs for more meaningful, competitive scrimmages.

The NFL scrimmages against other teams. Even in high school they scrimmage against other teams. […] So I don’t see why they could not pull this off at the college level.

It makes sense for this coaching staff to stay conservative with the game plan on A-Day. There’s plenty left to be settled with another transfer portal season, commits that have yet to arrive on campus, and a new hybrid offensive playbook that has yet to completely take form. Fans will want to see some fireworks and some assurances that we have a true starting QB on the roster. But what should Auburn fans be expecting for A-Day? What will the new format look like?
