While the transfer portal has been incredibly kind to Auburn so far, there’s one position Hugh Freeze was hoping to bolster that has gone unaddressed: QB.
Hugh Freeze has so far spent his first offseason as Auburn Football’s head coach by stocking the cupboards with much needed talent for both starting positions and depth. Offensive line, defensive line, and linebacker have been heavily addressed in the transfer portal, with offensive line looking to possibly start up to 3 transfer players. One position that hasn’t added any additional talent, though, is QB.
There was interest in a handful of transfer portal QBs, including former NC State QB Devin Leary and Coastal Carolina’s Grayson McCall. As two of the most accomplished QBs in the portal, they made sense as options for Freeze & Co, but neither QB panned out. That leaves incumbent Robby Ashford as the frontrunner for the starting job.
His prospects to be the number one quarterback going into the season have improved dramatically because there is nobody with experience to challenge him in the Spring. […] You won’t jump Robby Ashford (after Spring) if you lost your quarterback battle at your other school.

Robby Ashford’s 2022 season performance is hard to evaluate objectively in the face of so much turnover. A bad system, a poorly performing offensive line, and then a hurt throwing shoulder weighed down Robby Ashford’s production and development. Will he make the necessary strides in the offseason to firmly grasp the starting job? Or will there be a transfer portal QB the staff could bring in during the May window that would compete with him for the starting job?
