Stop me if you have heard this one before. Auburn is searching for a Portal QB to come in and join the battle.
Each of the last 2 seasons, that has been the case. It was TJ Finley who came in to add depth to the room. He was challenging, then incumbent starter, Bo Nix for the starting duties. Then, last year, with TJ Finley as the incumbent, Auburn brought in Robby Ashford and Zac Calzada. Calzada is gone, already, Finley is contemplating leaving, and Ashford is still dealing with some shoulder issues. Now, it seems like another transfer QB is on the horizon. The question is, which one?
Now that the portal window is closed, we can have a more accurate look at who is available and two names rise to the top of the wish list: Casey Thompson, the Nebraska transfer, and Payton Thorne, the Michigan State transfer. Casey Thompson has already made a visit to Auburn. So, we know there is some mutual interest there. Thorne has yet to get an offer or set a visit. So, it is unclear, right now, where he stands.
Regardless of which one it is, it is clear that Auburn is in the market. With the status of TJ Finley still unclear, the coaching staff has to prepare to round out the room. So, one of these two QBs is likely to land on the Plains. It would be unfortunate if Coach Hugh Freeze was unable to land either. That would put the QB depth chart in a very precarious spot going into the fall.
