There are a lot of words that can be used to describe the 2023 Spring Game for Auburn Football. “Pretty” is not one of them. However, there are still things that we can try to glean from it. In an ugly game, it highlights the dirty work in the trenches even more. From watching this game, it seems like the Auburn Defense is looking light in the trenches.
For a group that is as talented as the defensive line is and as deep as it seems to be, they did not offer much resistance for the Auburn run game. Now, it is hard to assess just how good the Auburn Offensive line is in rainy conditions like this past Saturday, however, one would expect when the offense has shown a commitment to run the ball, the defense would, at some point, bow up and stop them. That did not seem to be the case.
Guys like defensive tackle, Jayson Jones, seemed to believe that the defense could have played better. The Auburn rushing attack was able to put up 5.5 Yards per carry in the A-Day game. As a unit, last season, Auburn surrendered 4.64 yards per attempt. This is not trending in the right direction.
Is our offensive line […] the truth this year? Or do we have some things to worry about when it comes to defense?
– Ike Jones on The Morning Drop
Now, because it is an inter-squad scrimmage, it is that much harder to evaluate whether that means we are great at run blocking or very bad at run defense. I am sure the truth lies some where in the middle. However, for a unit that brought in additional guys to help bolster the defensive line, the early results leave something to be desired. Auburn fans certainly hope that this is not a bad omen for the Fall.
