A Vote Of Confidence

After making the rounds in advance of the Auburn vs LSU matchup, we revisit our early August 2022 Building Rapport interview with Koy Moore.

Koy Moore’s confidence steadies him as he prepares to play his old teammates in Jordan-Hare Stadium as Auburn takes on LSU.

As is the case every game week, fanbases and media outlets surf the web for bits of content that will rile up the opposition and get the people going. Things were relatively quiet this week outside of the usual fan-fueled social media jostling occurring between Tiger fans.

That is, until an almost 2 month old interview we did with Koy Moore popped up stripped of context and started circulating on social media.

In the clip, Koy answers our Ike Jones’s question about his departure from LSU, and Koy takes the time to reaffirm his confidence in his abilities over anybody in LSU’s WR room. When given the opportunity to correct the statement – given that standout WR Kayshon Boutte is still a member of that LSU WR room – Koy stood firm, again stating the confidence that he’s better than the WR’s in the room.

LSU fans have, of course, taken offense to this assertion and mockingly quoted Koy’s stats in comparison to Boutte’s.

In reality, Auburn’s QB and O-line play are far worse than LSU’s by a wide margin in both production and quality of play. Auburn’s OL has suffered not only diminished play, but a rash of injuries since the spring, with Auburn heading into this game expected to start their 4th string center.

Kayshon Boutte has been suspiciously absent this season, being visibly frustrated in LSU’s opening season loss to FSU. He missed LSU’s most recent game – a victory over Miss St – due to the birth of his child.

We at The War Rapport never believe that the entire measure of what a player can be is as simple as where he sits on the depth chart or what his early career stats are. Players improve, coaches can get it wrong, and the system has a lot to do with what a player can show on the field. We live in a world where Tank Bigsby started the 2020 season as RB3, NFL QB Malik Willis couldn’t see the field over Bo Nix, and Heisman winner & Super Bowl QB Joe Burrow had to transfer get a start. Their stories didn’t exactly end there though.

Auburn’s offense has underachieved so far this season, but we’re hoping to see some big changes that result in Koy Moore at least getting the opportunity to back up his proclamations with big plays on the field. If not, he won’t be the only person frustrated this weekend.
