Saying Goodbye to Elyjah Freeman’s Potential

Auburn fans, this one stings. Just as we were starting to envision the high-flying highlights of next season, the news broke: Elyjah Freeman has officially decided to enter the transfer portal. While it’s the reality of modern college athletics, it doesn’t make the departure of a player with such “tremendous upside” any easier to swallow. The Tigers find themselves saying goodbye to Elyjah Freeman’s potential.

A Spark of Potential Extinguished

Freeman wasn’t just another roster spot; he was a 6’7″ athletic freak who teased us with flashes of what could have been a breakout year. Whether it was his ability to jump out of the gym or the way he could have anchored a second-unit defense, the “what-ifs” are already piling up.

While rumors of Freeman being “locked in” were swirling, the energy in the locker room after the season-ending loss didn’t quite match the report. It seems Freeman is looking for a situation where he can be a top-tier scoring priority—a role that might have been hard to guarantee with Kevin Overton and potentially Tahaad Pettiford returning to lead the charge.

Looking Ahead

The loss of Freeman opens up a significant amount of NIL capital that Auburn can now pivot toward other targets. There is an immediate need for an atheltic wing that can guard multiple positions.

It’s a tough pill to swallow because Freeman felt like a quintessential Pearl-style developmental star. We wish him the best as he “tests the waters.”
