Johni Broome Declares for Draft Evaluation, Remains College Eligible

Auburn’s 2nd Team All-SEC big man is Testing the NBA Waters, but is keeping his college options open.

In a surprise announcement, rising Junior frontcourt player for Auburn Basketball, Johni Broome announced via his Instagram account that he intends to declare for the NBA Draft.

Broome, who was named 2nd Team All-SEC in his first season with the Tigers, is thought to be a crucial piece of the front court for Auburn Basketball for the upcoming season. Though it was widely thought that the NBA was a part of his plans in the previous off-season, this move comes as shock. The talented big-man, had a good year but it ended rather unceremoniously.

Though Broome has declared, he made it clear that he intends to keep maintain his eligibility. This leads many to speculate that he will, in fact, return for his Junior season for Coach Bruce Pearl and company. However, that is not a guarantee.

I don’t see a reason to make this decision in the age of NIL.

A similar decision is forthcoming for forwards Jaylin Williams and Allen Flanigan. Both of the seniors have 1 additional year of eligibility remaining but could both decide to test the NBA Draft and look at their professional prospects during this off-season. If that is the case, Coach Pearl and staff are left in a tough space. They need to solidify a roster during a hot portal season with a lot of questions marks remaining.
